Explore and try to make pottery in Bat Trang Village, visit the Temple of Literature, drive through the French Quarter, and watch a water puppet show.
8:00 am: Pick up at your hotel and transfer to Bat Trang village, located on the Red River bank and about 20 km from Hanoi center. This is one of the most well-known traditional porcelain-making villages in Vietnam. Over 700 years, many generations of Bat Trang still maintain the traditional handicrafts left by their ancestors and continue to blow their souls into each fiber of the soil every day to create sophisticated ceramic products.
We’ll visit the Bat Trang communal house, built in 1720 to worship the village tutelary god who founded this ceramic craft village. Visit a family-run pottery factory where your guide will explain to you the ceramic production processes. You have the opportunity to watch craftsmen work, participate in hands-on and try to make a ceramic product yourself. Stroll around the village, admire the beautiful products displayed in the shops, and buy handmade pottery to take home as souvenirs.
Transfer back to the city center, have a break for lunch (at your own expense), then visit the Temple of Literature. The historic site was built under the Ly dynasty in the 11th century for the worship of Confucius and the teaching of the children of the royal family and the nobility. Stroll in the Garden of Literature (Giam Garden) to Khue Van Cac (the symbol of Hanoi). Then explore Quoc Tu Giam (the first university of Vietnam), and continue to visit monuments like 82 Doctoral Stelaes (a world documentary heritage), Thien Quang Well, the House of Ceremonies…
Driving through the French Quarter, passing Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and the Presidential Palace to the Old Quarter of Hanoi which originated from the Ly-Tran period (about 11th century). This area served as a busy trading hub in the ancient Thang Long with 36 streets that sold different typical products. Through many ups and downs, the Old Quarter has always been regarded as a living museum in the very heart of the capital and not to be missed when traveling to Hanoi. Unique tube houses, open-air markets, temples, small alleys, and street vendors are all harmoniously connected. One of the best ways to stimulate all of your senses is to explore the streets on foot.
Finish off the day by enjoying a water puppet show, a traditional Vietnamese performing art form that originated in the 11th century in the Red River Delta. Water puppetry is a combination of puppetry techniques, water effects, and traditional music which provide an impressive visual experience. These shows usually showcase mythical stories, culture, beliefs, and daily life of Vietnamese people through the control of puppets on the water.
